Went to Steve's Snappin' Dogs for lunch. They have a new chili recipe. I want that.

I get two dogs that highlight the chili.

The Dallas Dog. Onions, cheese, mustard, and chili!

Denver Dog. AKA Homey Dog. Cheddar jack cheese, jalapeno peppers, sliced bacon, sliced tomato & lettuce wrapped in a flour tortilla. And chili!

We were in Vegas earlier this month and I wanted to do a challenge.

It ended up being the Big Sicilian Challenge at Verrazano Pizza.

5 have tried (2 photos not up yet). None have finished.

Where the magic happens

Ready to go. The pizza was super super steamy hot. You want to allow it to cool some, but not too much because cold cheese is terrible.

Just started to dig in. Good stuff. Hot stuff. Many thanks to the manager for allowing the sub in of bacon for the sausage. Bacon makes anything better!

I ate the corner pieces first to protect from the corner crusts becoming tough.

I cut the last piece in to 4 smaller pieces. Approximate minute splits for each piece: 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 5, 10, 13. Ugh! The last 2 pieces took FOREVER to get down!

But, hey, finished! That is my 4th eating challenge first-to-finish. Nice! I'd love to be able to do it again and improve on that time!

I whacked it. 1st to do it, 1st eating challenge of 2012, 1st success of 2012.

Recovery Day Eats

1 Powerade Zero = 0 cal
1 Chocolate chip Clif Bar = 240 cal
6 slices turkey cold cuts (20 cal each) = 120 cal
1 Hot choco = 120 cal

Total caloric intake for the day: 900 calories. Nice!

Humpy's Big Kahuna Lu'au Feast

We were in Kona earlier this month. Last time there I had seen a Humpy's. I thought "wasn't there a challenge on Man v Food at a Humpy's"? At a Humpy's in Anchorage. I checked, and it was the same Humpy's family. In Alaska the challenge is crab and reindeer. In Hawaii, it's Kalua pig and poke. I had to go do it!

The challenge at Humpy's in Kona is not on the menu so do not expect to see it, but do it now that you know about it, Arnold put together some ono kine grinds, and everyone at Humpy's was super nice! I'll be back guys!

This was the 19th eating challenge in 2011. Before the eat I was an even 9 and 9 in the 18 previous eating challenges in 2011. 9.2 pounds? That's big for me, but I had to eat this thing! I limped in with a 2011 eating challenge record of 9 and 10. 2012!

The last post reviewed my eating challenges in 2011. 9 success. 10 failed. Not that good, but I think 5 of the failures were above my capacity, and I pretty much knew it going in but any eating challenge is delicious, a great time shared with family and friends, and all good. Those things couldn't have been summed up better than my last challenge, failed, at Humpy's. In Kona. Hawaii. Good food, lots of fun, and good good times. Did I mention it was in Hawaii? Sure, it was 9.2 pounds. But in Hawaii.

Below are the eating contests in which I competed in 2011. With these local events, Ricky Bobby said it best: if you ain't first, you're last. Too bad that I was not first too many times!

25 contests. 7 wins. Lots of 2nds. And others.

Most painful loss was definitely the taco eating contest on 7/19. I was the 3-time defending champion. And I blew it. I still was 2nd, that's respectable, but I lost by 3 tacos. Thrashed. But I guess in a way losing by 3 is better than losing by an ounce. And then the next contest that was going to be in October was postponed. My attempt to take back the title has to wait until 2012.

In April 2011, I rocked the tot at Bar Louie. Well, rocked to 2nd place. Again. For the third year in a row! Same with the hot dog contest in Highlands Ranch in July. 2nd again for the third year in a row.

I was 2nd also in a contest in Hawaii in August. But again, it's Hawaii. A few weeks ago we were in Hawaii. I was sick as a dog the whole time. But being sick in Hawaii is so much better than not being sick anywhere else.

Finishing 2011 was a pizza contest. Fourth time competing in it. Fourth time to be 2nd in it. Ugh.

I don't know what 2012 holds for eating contests, but it'll be fun! Later!

Here is the Wall of Fame at Sadie's in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The challenge is a 6.5lb stuffed sopaipilla, some tortilla chips, bowl of salsa, and a dessert-sized soapaipilla. They began offering the challenge in the middle of 2009. Since then, 100 people have tried and only these 5 have completed it in the 60 minutes.

Let's start with this:

That's me getting my photo taken for the Apollo Challenge Wall of Fame at Taste of Philly. At this store for the 2nd time. Overall, for the 4th time.

This is the wall of fame and the Highlands Ranch store. The two guys on the right have times of 13 and 15 minutes.

CJo signing the waiver to get some. Some of the Apollo Challenge: 44 ounces of meat, 18 ounces of a white cheese, 1/2 pound of onions, all stuffed inside of a 20" Amoroso roll. I think there had to be more cheese than that.

My 2nd half. I fork in the meat until it's able to be picked up and eaten like a sandwich. I got the 1st half down in just over 6 minutes.

Went down to Oktoberfest Denver for a brat eating contest. Joey Chestnut and Bryan Beard would be one exhibition within the contest which had the representatives from charities eating for them. I was eating for Project Angel Heart. There were 10 or 11 others.

I got there early and walked around a bit. Saw this:

It's called Stein Hoisting. Objective is to hold up the steins of beer, arms stretched out and elbows locked. I entered. Didn't last long. Damn liquid!

Crazy Legs Conti on the microphone. He caused some stuff in the eating world last year when he was caught on video doing some stuff. I had to laugh like shit when as the totals of brats eating were being tabulated and he says something like "nobody palm anything or try any other sleight of hand stuff". Hilarious!

8 minutes on the clock.

Look at the guy next to me. Oh, my first drink in the contest was of this tea. It wasn't good at all.

I have the meat juice all over my face.

Sorry for that last comment. But not sorry enough to remove it! Near the end.

The final stuff at the end. The counting was by whole brats, so the final stuff had to be the whole thing.

I finished with 16. The MLE guns: Joey downed 38, Big Sexy with 30.

I won $250 for Project Angel Heart. That's great, and I feel great for doing that, but 3rd place didn't get it done for them. Oh well, we'll see what happens next...

Back at Mannie & Bo's Pizzeria in Golden to try the calzone challenge. Jimmy & I were the 1st team to conquer the team challenge. But I want to be the 1st to take down the solo challenge.

I didn't plan to try it again until September, but the situation presents itself the day before. So I go in without the lead time I prefer, but hey!

2011 Chow Down for Charity Hot Dog Eating Contest

Steve's Snappin' Dogs Hosts 4th Annual Chow Down for Charity
Hot Dog Eating Contest in Celebration of National Hot Dog Month

July is National Hot Dog Month. In honor of the occasion, Steve's Snappin' Dogs (3525 East Colfax Avenue) will host its annual Chow Down for Charity hot dog eating contest this Sunday, July 31st starting at 1:00 pm. The event will feature the top eight contestants who qualified throughout the year. The group, known as the "Elite Ate", will be given eight minutes to chow down as many hot dogs as they can. The winner receives a cash prize, trophy and is crowned "Top Dog" of the year. Two-time winner and contest record holder for most hot dogs consumed in the contest, Jimmy Mares, will be competing for a perfect trifecta this year and will compete alongside other contest perennials, Andrew Lane and Mark Sutherberg who respectively placed second and third in last year's contest.

Newcomer Dominic Doan of Arvada receives an automatic bid to the finals after winning Steve's hot dog eating contest qualifiers at A Taste of Colorado last September. Doan successfully beat out Lane and Sutherberg at those contests which adds to speculation on whether Doan can beat the heavily-favored Mares at Sunday's finals. Whether it is Mares, Doan, Lane, Sutherberg or one of the other contestants, this year's chow down offers to be a competitive one.

Now in its fourth year, the contest is the brainchild of Steve's Ballas, the owner and operator of Steve's Snappin' Dogs. Ballas was simply looking to develop a new and exciting way to raise money for his favorite charity - Project Angel Heart. His Chow Down for Charity concept has grown and through this and other fund raising efforts, Ballas has successfully helped raise over $7.000 for the charity. A total of 25% of the sales and a portion of entry fee will directly benefit Project Angel Heart from Sunday's event.

The highly visual event is free, open to the general public and will take place at Steve's Snappin' Dogs on 3525 East Colfax Ave (@Monroe) In Denver.

Now That's a Burrito!

Went down to Colorado Springs to take on the El Gordo Burrito Challenge at Puerto Palomas. Great place! T-bonz, Mommye, and 3M were there to witness it.

Going in, I thought "30 minutes to down a 5 pound burrito? No problem."

But, and as advertised actually, the burrito was 5 pounds of meats stuffed inside 3 massive homemade tortillas. Plus beans, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and manteca. Lots and lots of manteca. Do the math, and the final weight was over 8 pounds. The presentation was nice with the lettuce leaves and tomato slices.

Time to get at it. 30 minutes.

Easily the tastiest oversized eating challenge item I've eaten. Easily. The side of the burrito that I started on had barbacoa mostly. The other meats were mixed in to some degree but pretty much it was 1/3 barbacoa, 1/3 carne asada, and 1/3 carnitas. But 1/1 delicious!

I ate just over 1/2 in those 30 minutes. 8+ pounds in a solo challenge is too much for me. 8+ in a contest, I've done that. 8+ in a non-solo eating challenge? Maybe. How tasty was it? I took the left overs home. I have never done that before, mainly because I normally have had enough of an unfinished challenge food.

And I ate, very uncharacteristically, cleanly so my plate was not a mess at all. I had been provided a big knife and big spoon so I cut big bites off. Didn't go hands with it.

Can't wait to go back. There are some other dishes to try, notably the Juarez Burger. A colossal mash-up of lipids from both sides of the border that includes a burger patty, ham, mild, melted white cheese, bacon, avocado, mayo and a hot dog sliced lengthwise. Hold the mayo, please!

#4 at Mezcal

A few nights ago was the 4th taco eating contest at Mezcal. I had won contests 1, 2, and 3. #4?

Round 1. The 13 competitors had 15 minutes to eat 20 tacos. Top 5 would move on to Round 2. As in contests 1-3, eaters could have either chicken or veggie tacos. I went with the chicken tacos again. Tacos of the street variety, so a corn tortilla + chicken or veggie + cabbage + bit of hot sauce. Four guys with veggie tacos finished first. Only one spot left in the final round. Me and some dude were neck and neck for that 5th spot. We both finished our plate of 20 tacos at essentially the same time, and it came down to clearing the mouth. I as usual had a bunch packed away in my cheeks, but I did get my mouth clear before the other guy. Barely.

This is after round 1 ended. That's the guy who could have taken my spot.

Round 2. The five of us would have 5 minutes to eat. Winner would be whoever ate the most in those 5 minutes. The field was me with chicken tacos and 4 guys with veggie tacos. I had barely made it in the round, so I did for a split second think about going with veggie, but I didn’t. I had done chicken in the previous contests too, so I stuck with my choice. Bad move because one of the other guys ate 10 to my 7. I had always since contest #1 wondered when chicken would bite me in the ass. And it did this night. I wonder what the weight of my chicken tacos is in comparison to veggie tacos?

Still I did finish 2nd, but my streak ended. So I know what I need to do so I can begin another streak.

Hot Dogs in Highlands Ranch

I've been in the Highlands Ranch hot dog eating contest sponsored by Bernie's Hot Dogs for the past 3 years, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd annuals. Each time, 2nd place. Above are the three trophies for 2nd.

In the contest this year on July 4th the top 3 results were the exact same as last year. The guy who won last year also won this year. I tied with the same guy as last year. In the eat-off, I won it so I took 2nd place. Him 3rd.

Other than being 100 degrees this year, not much was different than last year. I ate like crap and pretty much cannonballed the hot dogs and buns. At the end I thought I was out of the running but it turned out everyone ate pretty badly. The dogs, Vienna Beef, were great. The buns, not so much. Dry. Hard. But fun.

Mannie & Bo's Pizzeria in Golden. Jimmy & I each tried the calzone challenge separately a few months ago. Neither of us defeated it. We went back at the end of June to try it as a team.

Before cooking it. 6 pounds of goodness! Lots of meat. Lots of cheese.

Now it is cooked & we're ready!

Before our team attempt, the calzone's record is 17-0. Nobody has defeated it. One person has an hour. A team of two people has 30 minutes.

Wow. 4 pounds of meat.

We cut it in half, cut each half in half, and dig in.

It's hot, no doubt.

Working on our first quarters. We flew through these.

We're each on our final portions.

We got through our first portions in no time (four minutes or so). But each of us hit a wall or something. That's common for me - in my last cheesesteak run I flew through the first half in 3 minutes but limped in with 19 minutes for the other half.

Guaps and I sort of chuckled when they brought out the 5-gallon puke buckets, but it turned out to be a good thing. I think Mikey needed every one of those gallons to hold his quite voluminous discharge!

Caldonia’s in Aurora started an eating challenge in April. The Big Haas. Two half-pound Juicy Lucy patties, bacon, hot links, half-pound of smoked brisket, quarter-pound of ham, two fried eggs, cheese, mayo, angry dills, and all between two Texas toast grilled cheese sandwiches. Grilled onions, too? And two pounds of chili cheese fries which are doused in a cheese sauce – like Que Bueno or something. [Going in, I thought chile cheese fries, not chili cheese fries – WRONG]. A total of 6.2 pounds, or 100.6 ounces. Up to my attempt at it, 20 or so people had tried with nobody succeeding in eating the whole thing.

T-bonz. Mommye. SAW. My meal. 45 minutes on the clock. What I had been waiting for all day – it’s on!

I dig in to the top grilled cheese. Delicious. Ooey gooey goodness. The next 15 minutes were blurry, but I went layer by layer and more or less finished off the sandwich. The different meats involved were out of this world good – total meatgasm. The eggs provided just enough slime (in a very good way) to lube up the bites and to allow me to get them down without too much liquid having to be consumed (water and Gatorade G2 green was the beverage of choice).

I finished off the bottom grilled cheese. All along I had been mixing in some fries. So after polishing off the sandwich I had left the mound of fries.

Have I mentioned before that fries, in any form, are my nemesis? Have been and will be. It’s not potatoes that I despise. In a fried form though, I do. Shoestring, waffle, steak fries, whatever. Maybe it’s a texture thing of fried potatoes, I don’t know. Hash browns, OK. But deep fried potatoes, not so much.

Back to the challenge. After downing the sandwich in fine time, I plod – really, nothing more than that, just hanging on - through the fries. And finish with just over a minute and a half to spare. No doubt that T-bonz, Mommye, SAW, and the whole crowd pulled me through the last few minutes.

The employees at Caldonia’s, terrific. They were totally in to wanting somebody to finish The Big Haas. Patrick, the kitchen manager, created this beast. His earlier challenge was conquered in short order, so The Big Haas, built on that earlier challenge, was divined to be unconquerable by most.

It’s funny, for the last few months we’d drive by Caldonia’s every now and then and I’d say “why don’t they have an eating contest or challenge?”. Now they do. And it’s delicious.

Afterwards, two more 1sts to go along with me being the 1st to finish the challenge. We went to DQ and I could not finish the small cup of the vanilla soft-serve. And, I could not watch the new Man v. Food Nation.

Last night, Guaps & I checked out Baconalia on the way to the U2 show in Denver. Here it is - Bacon Meatloaf!

I was going to finish off the meal with a Maple Bacon Sundae, but did not. Next time, definitely.

Great visual show. Maybe the best I've seen, visually. The vocals - when any instrument was playing - sounded pretty bad. But the visual stuff made up for that. I last saw U2 in 1987 when they toured for The Joshua Tree. That show was the other way - incredible sound, and sparse theatrics. Life-changing for me, really. This one did not change my life, but it was a great show.

With all the competitors space was tight. Each competitor had 3 stacked baskets in front of them. The tots in basket #1 were tot form, but baskets #2 and #3 where completely oily mush. I have to work on my scoopaging.

I started out one tot at a time alternating right, left, right, left, right. Then sip, munch, clear, and do it again. That worked well for basket #1, but did not work too well with the mush in baskets #2 and #3. But I continued.

I chose to go to the Bar Louie in Centennial instead of going to the Denver Bar Louie as I had in 2009 and 2010. Oops. Bad choice.

Mezcal Tacos #3

The Taco Eating Contest at Mezcal was the first contest of the week. I had won the first two taco contests at Mezcal. Can I defend again and make it 3 in a row?

No T-bonz, but my spiritual advisor Guapo Ribinowitz was there to substitute-coach, captain my security detail, and rock the camera.

Everyone got a plate of 20 street tacos for round #1. We had 15 minutes to eat them. Tacos were 1 4" soft corn tortilla, chicken, cabbage, and a sauce.

Me and the dude 2nd from the right in the photo were the only two people to finish the 20. We barely finished. Three others were moved on to round #2 so there would be more competing.

Between that, here's what happened:

Gordo Loco has been open for a few weeks but they had the "Grande Opening" and part of that was a burrito eating contest. On their menu is the 5 pound El Diablo burrito. Some carnitas, chicken, green chile. And 2 pounds of fries. In the burrito. And it is smothered.

The ingredients in the burrito are quite wet so the El Diablo is more flat and spready than burrito form.

The Mejia campaign (a guy running for mayor) was represented.

There were 14 competitors. It was broken in 3 waves, each wave overlapped the other wave. Everyone in the 1st wave used knives and forks. I was in the 2nd wave. You know how I eat. I went to town with it. The crowd gasped. People, this is an eating contest, not a beauty contest.

Sushi Wave

My photo didn't come out too well, but the all-you-can-eat at Sushi Wave is very good in taste and also very good in deal. I had it for lunch. $20 for ayce, drink, and tip.

This is the sheet for the ayce. You can pick what you want.

Here's the full prices. They do not skimp on the ayce. But there are a few things. One being you must eat everything you order or they will charge you full price for unfinished items. But that should not be a problem. It's good. Really good.

First Sunday in March? Lots of testicles to eat. For the 3rd year, I head up to the rocky mountain oyster eating contest. 2nd the first time in 2009, 2nd in 2010, and 2011?

The contest featured a couple prelim rounds from which the top 2 in each heat move on to the finals. Since I began eating, I've known that I really do not like the first-to-finish format. If we had bigger plates of balls maybe I'd like the format, but when we have 1-pound plates the heat lasts a minute or two. That's not my strength.

I watched the 1st heat. Seven people. I couldn't see the guy who won it, but he pounded his balls very quickly. The 2nd in the heat was a female. My heat, 6 people. A big mountain of a man - a motherf-ing Ben Monson look-alike and MMA fighter - won it. I got 2nd. Him and the dude from the 1st heat would be tough to beat.

The winner from last year was in my heat. I did defeat him this time.

Finals: MMA guy, stoner guy from heat 1, Marlowe, me. MMA finished in maybe a minute, stoner guy was maybe 1:15, and Marlowe and I finished at the same time - very exciting for her and her kids! Awesome! Made me happy that she got 3rd and seeing her kids react to it!

After the eating, the eating. Ripple Frozen Yogurt in Boulder. It's Yogurtland with more toppings to choose. But their Passion Fruit is yummy.

The thing that I find impressive is that she didn't plan on doing the burrito. Or the pizza, for whatever that's worth. For the pizza she arrived in town, went to the place, and ate it. No real thought about it. And the burrito, we went there just to eat something, but she decided to eat the burrito. And during the eating, she didn't go for time but she just ate it. We were just chilling, talking, and before long it was gone!

That's a Denver dog at Steve's Snappin' Dogs. Chili con carne, cheddar jack cheese, jalapeno peppers, sliced bacon, sliced tomato & lettuce wrapped in a flour tortilla. Yes, a hot dog burrito! And it's good!

Steve's celebrated its 5th anniversary this weekend. Awesome! Every customer got a free Twinkie or Cupcake.

Jimmy and I met up at Abo's Pizza to take their 28" pizza challenge. A team of two people have 1 hour to completely eat a 28" two-topping pizza. You cannot stand up once the time starts. We chose red onion and pepperoni. 32 teams have tried, and none of them have finished the pizza, let alone in the time limit.

20 minutes later, it's time. We have a seat, and we dig in. It's hot, just out of the oven. We're both handsy eaters so we have no problem: slide off the hot cheese + topping layer and work on the crust.

Going in I thought 20 minutes would be our time. It ended up that we took more time, but my thought of 20 minutes was right on in one way: the cheese, which was at the start hot and gooey, solidified and congealed quite dramatically at 20 minutes. Too bad we missed that time.

We finished in 32:02. That time could have been a few minutes better if I didn't take so long to clear at the end. The Abo's guy waited until we cleared before stopping the time.

We are the only team out of 32 previous teams to finish. And for other teams to beat the challenge now they'd have to do it with a faster time than ours. A first for me: a photo of Jimmy and I (Team JiminBomber) will go on the restaurant wall right by the menu board!

Pizza specs: 12.5 pounds - 7 lbs dough, 2 lbs sauce, 2 lbs cheese, 1.5 lbs of red onion + pepperoni.

You remember a couple months ago when I went to America's Bar & Grill to eat in the Atomic Reaper Wing Eating Contest? To put it mildly, I suffered mightily with the intestinal after-effects. Vowed to NEVER do it again?

Well, I went back! They held another Atomic Reaper Wing Eating Contest. I won, but who can really win with these things?

T-bonz did some spot on coachy-coachin'. The contest was held on the patio in the single degree temps. 10 saucy, saucy wings. First one done won.

T-bonz and I go to Brown Cow for one of their challenges.

See, I was in a good mood.

But when I get there I decided to try their burger challenge. I think it's the first time I try a challenge on a whim.

The burger is 100% angus chuck. Very good meat.

Nice clean place. I think it was a Tokyo Joe's before.

This is the Cow Tipper. 3 pounds of steakburger + 1 lb bun + 1 lb toppings (cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles) + 1 lb thin cut fries + 32 oz shake (I went with strawberry). 1 hour to eat it.

8 pounds is probably out of my range even if I prepared. But to only have most of the bun and 1/2 the fries left is pretty good for me. For going in cold, not having pooped that day, and not knowing what this would be, I'm OK with it. Another failure sucks, and T-bonz was coachy-coachin like crazy, but it happens.

As for Brown Cow, get there! Yes, their site (and Facebook page) need some updating quite badly, but that shake had to be the best ever. Also worth a mention: the meat. Delicious, not greasy, and I wish there could be more meat and less bun. Next time: I'll have a hunger that can only be satisfied with more cowbell!

Crave Burgers

Back to Crave in Castle Rock. I tried the challenge a couple of months ago. This time, me, T-bonz, Mommye, and 3M go to have lunch.

Going in I planned to have the Fatty Melt - bacon cheeseburger, tomato and pickle between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. But our server, Roberto, remembered me from last time and suggested an off-the-menu creation, the DOUBLE FATTY MELT. From the bottom up: grilled cheese, bacon cheeseburger, tomato, pickle, another grilled cheese, bacon cheeseburger, tomato, pickle, another grilled cheese.

Before we ordered our burgers we ordered shakes.

S'mores Shake. Handmade & toasted marshmallow, drizzle with chocolate, graham crackers, just incredible.

T-bonz went with a Shakeyato. Coffee is unpalatable to me, but this shake kicked ass.

Outrageous!

T-bonz and I went to the Rock Rest Lodge in Golden for the taping of a feature for Outrageous Foods. The Food Network was there taping at Rock Rest because the lodge serves intact jumbo chicken wings (drum, paddle, nub) and one of the wing sauces is made with ghost chiles that they grow themselves. I would have thought that the Outrageous-ness at the lodge was the Peanut Butter Burger Challenge, but no.

I was to be in the wing eating contest that will be part of the feature of the lodge on the show. We got there a little early to watch some of the other filming. It was weird; when they called "action" the whole bar got quiet. Nobody even taking steps on the floor because it would creak. But after a while, the wing contest.

4 guys. 2 girls. We each had a plate of 10 wings. First one done wins. But it’s for TV so we had to walk in and sit down a couple of takes. The host moved down the line and chatted a couple of times. We each were filmed separately reacting to the 10 wings before us. And the producer had Tom say some stuff and then say “GO”. A couple of us started, but that was not the signal to start. But “GO” was.

After

Definitely hot wings, for sure, but more about the flavor actually. Really good. Unlike the Atomic Reaper wings, you’d want to eat more of these. And the intestinal effects are nothing in comparison between the two.

During the eating, one of the assistants kept having me wipe off my face. Right! One, no chance - that’s how I eat in contests, especially saucy contests. Two, I think that would look better on tape – leaving the sauce all over my face - because wiping it off would smear it around, no? Oh well, I made it.

At the end, it was very close between me and another guy. Tom called it my way! Fun stuff! The episode will the run in late spring or so.

Quite a month for Rock Rest! The GM not only scored this Outrageous Foods segment, he also scored the KBPI Wing Bowl - all the qualifiers are at Rock Rest and they will be the wing supplier for the semis and finals. Way to go, Bob!

And last night at the Rock Rest Lodge in Golden, Colorado was the first night of preliminary rounds for Team Nasty. I've made it to the semi-finals the last two years. Let's do this!

T-bonz and I get there, sign up, and we wait around for the 1st heat. Earlier in the day I had inquired about the length of the heats. 5 minutes they said. That's perfect for me - some time to get going, get in to it, and bring it home. But when we get there we find out the heats are now 2 minutes! 2 minutes? That sucks. And I find out the wing sauce is not the bar's HOT but the mild. Dang it!

So the heat begins. And before I know it, it is over. I did OK. The team will be made up of the top 10 qualifiers after the qualifiers end. So I guess I have two more shots at Team Nasty.

Above is the final results sheet from the wing eating contest Night #1. Winner had 1.15 pounds. I had 1.11 pounds. We'll see if that total holds up to qualify. I don't think it will but we'll see.

T-bonz & I went to have some dinner at Mezcal:

In the background are my two plates: carne asada burrito and an order of 3 tacos. In the foreground is the combination plate (#2) that T-bonz ordered.

As always, the presentation was superb. My burrito - loaded with rice, pinto beans, and tasty shredded beef. Perfect! Next time I am getting it smothered. The tacos I had to get, and that was a good move. The two steak tacos, wow! One taco was Al Pastor - incredible - topped with pineapple bits.

Two thumbs up!

The lineup of the combo: tamale, carne asada burrito, and a chicken enchilada. All three were outstanding. We'll be back!

I Won the Battle

So a few days ago I ate some chicken wings in the Atomic Reaper Wings Eating Contest at America’s Bar & Grill. I'm recovered now, but here's what went down after the contest:

Sunday, December 12

10:00PM : Eating contest is over. Three of us have completed it in record-time of under 3 minutes. Face is on fire. Throat is swollen. Sweating.

10:00PM – 1:45AM : Nothing really of note. Downed some yogurt, water and Tums, but nothing big.

1:45AM – 2:00AM : Feel a serious rollin in colon, but production is of no wingage

2:00AM : Regurgitate maybe 4oz. Burned like hell coming up, especially in back of throat and in nose.

2:00AM - 3:00AM : Waves of me being shivering cold and not cold

3:00AM – 4:30AM : Actually got some sleep

4:30AM : Awoken with bad feeling in tummy. Wing poop begins - not much bulk but seriously burning anus. 3 of these.

5:30AM – 7:00AM : Every few minutes had very painful contractions alternating between pain for a few minutes and then no pain for a few minutes. Maybe 20 or so of these cycles.

7:00AM : Ate banana + saltines, then some chicken bullion. From this point on, no more stomach pain of note.

7:00AM – 4:00PM : No more stomach pain, but big time anus pain as I’d have 7 or 8 fiery poops. None produced much bulk, but the fire was incredible.

I think the next time I do these wings I will eat more after the eating. I hope that won’t make throwing up more of a threat because I’m not a puker. I tried just about everything not to puke at 2:00AM because I pretty much knew it would burn. And it did. I was expecting the throat burn but not the nose burn!

The idiots

Before each of us was a basket of 10 wings. All drums. Each wing was coated very liberally with the Reaper sauce - a truly lava-esque concoction of ghost chiles and who knows what else. I've done ghost chile challenges before, and they were not even close to the ferocity of these wings. Absolutely the hottest things I've ever eaten. EVER before, and hopefully EVER again.

3 guys got through all 10 wings in under 3 minutes, one guy put down 5, and the girls made it to 2 or 3 wings.

Boulder Rib Contest

RIBS!

The Rib House in Boulder had their second Battle to the Bone rib eating contest. The photo above is what was left of my 3rd rack.

One of the things I really like about this eating thing is that I go lot of places I probably would not go. The Rib House is in that category. Not because it’s a dump or anything like that. It’s in a beautiful building and prime location in the heart of downtown Boulder. But the food! The ribs at the Rib House – or, Tracy’s Famous Illegal Ribs – are absolutely hands-down no question the best ribs I have ever eaten. Hickory-smoked. Tender, tender, tender. And delicious, delicious, delicious. When hot, the meat absolutely falls off the bone in the best way imaginable.

You know what, the ribs cannot be described. If you live near Boulder (or Longmont, too) and eat meat, go here and eat these ribs or you are just stupid.

Back to the contest. Last time, Jon won with 3 full racks + a few bones. And I tied for 3rd with 2 1/3 racks. This time, Jon won again with 3 1/2 full racks, and I was 2nd with 2 1/2 full racks. There was a guy who could have tied for 2nd, but with about 2 minutes to go he stood up and spit out his mouthful in the trash. The contest this time produced the 1st guy to puke. He hit the end of the eating time, but he could not clear his mouth before he let loose.

The Rib House is going to be filmed in January and will be on a Travel Channel show. And also get time on CBS. Good for them. And good for anybody who has not eaten here.

Oh, my poop. Record! Record! Well, I haven't taken the weight of every poop I've dropped but usually when I do weigh them (because I expect it to be a good one) they come in about 1.5 pounds, and really good poops weigh in at 1.7 or 1.8 pounds.

But this one I knew would be good, but not this good!

I entered at 151.0 lbs. Exit at 148.8 lbs! 2.2 pounds! w00t!

Colossus Burger

Stopped in at the Club Fortune Casino in Henderson for the Colossus Burger Challenge.

The challenge is a burger, 12 1/4-pound patties, 6 slices of American cheese, 6 slices of white cheese, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, bun on top, bun on bottom, and two crown buns in the middle. You have 20 minutes to eat it. The burger is served with a side of fries but you do not have to eat those as part of the challenge.

Since the challenge began a few months ago, 50 people have attempted it. Only a dozen people have completed it, including one female. Finish it and get the burger for free, and a good looking t-shirt.

At the start the patties were hot, but they had a good amount of grease to slide down well. The patties cooled fast, and when they did they became congealed with the cheese and grease. Eat fast. The buns were toasted, so crispy.

Club Fortune is a nice little local casino. Visitors to the strip probably would not think to go here, but they should. Locals definitely must stop in every now and then.

Swine is Fine

You craving some real food? Head to Crave. They have the Big Bad Wolf Challenge. It consists of 3 loaded burgers and tons of fried onion strings.

Each burger is: 1/2 lb patty of some really delicious beef, 1 lb of a pulled pork-ham-bacon, and huge brioche buns. And some special sauce.

I started really well! Ate the patties, the pulled pork, ham, and bacon first.

Easily the best tasting eating challenge in my 5+ years of eating.

Killing it.

Here's where I think I made a mistake. I put some of the burger innards in the buns and ate that way. The buns were dense. Really dense. Next time, I will wait to do the buns until last.

Time is close to running out.

Time did run out. I had a little less than 1/2 of one burger remaining.

Me and T-bonz had an Elvis shake afterwards. Peanut butter ice cream, a banana, fudge, whipped cream, and BACON bits mixed in, and topped with two bacon strips! You, go there.

Screwed in the End

Went to the West End Tavern in Boulder to take the Wing King Challenge. I did it last year but wanted to do it again. We got seated at the same table, too.

The photo above is all you need to know about the challenge. No bones, just a few meat scraps and bits of skin.

I started out on a pretty good pace. First few minutes did 20 of the jumbo wings. Then something happened.

Fast forward.

In the final 10 seconds I had to really chipmunk the remaining meat. But the manager, when reviewing the rules, explicitly allowed chipmunking at the end. So the win/no win was not based upon that. I got through all 50 wings in 30 minutes, but because of the few bits of skin and meat detritus on my plate the manager would not declare the win. Never mind the clean bones or no debris on or off the table.

Clearly I screwed up by taking the challenge to the end of the allotted time, but c’mon. If anyone else were to see a before photo, and an after photo, that’d be a win. But the rules of the challenge are pretty clear...

I had gone there in October to take the Apollo Challenge.
I became the 1st person to complete the challenge at the 3 locations that offer it. Shockingly, my 22 minute time at this location is the best time.

A Big Steak

I went in expecting a 4 pound steak plus two sides of my choice. When I tried this in Beaver Creek last year the sides were normal-sized. But it turned out to be more.

Me & Dick say WTF with this HUGE salad?!?

Not more food, per se. But more poundage. For a moment, I thought about not doing it. But I wanted to do it because they can f*ck themselves. Same steak, but the sides were 1 pound each. So 1 pound of salad, and 1 pound of green chile. And the 4 pounds of steak.

And the steak, really pretty nasty. Sinewy, fatty, gristly, just nasty. Actually I pulled a muscle in my back because of the cutting. But it tasted pretty good. Not nearly as good as the big steak at the Big Texan, but passable indeed.

I started in on it. Killing it early. Quite flavorful. But as I got closer to the middle, it got more and more rare. It was nice and medium on the outer edges, but became medium rare, then rare, then still mooing. I had them cook the middle 1/3 more.

During that few minutes, I got on the green chile and salad. Actually forcing me to eat some chile and salad was a good move from a flavor fatigue perspective.

When the steak came back, it wasn't mooing. That's good. But the edges of the re-cooked meat were much more well-done than before.

I polished off the steak, then finished off the salad, gulped down the remainder of the chile, and I was done. 47 minutes.

The guy next to me bet our server $20 that I'd not finish. Ha!

I did take my pre weight. 152lbs. Post, 158lbs. 6 pounds. Exactly what I thought it would be because I hardly too in water or any other drink at all. The meat juice and the green chile provided good lube.

We walked around the corner for some Dairy Queen soft serve. Nice!

Coaching could not have been better. T-bonz, well, my rock. But also with Mommye, 3M, 2D, Letina [still working on a nickname]...even with the added poundage of the challenge with them my finishing was not in doubt. Thanks girls!

That’s about the only good thing I can say about Tuesday night.

That, and I defended my title at the Mezcal taco eating contest.

28 of us threw down. 28!

The contest was divided into 3 rounds. Round 1, we had 10 minutes to eat 15 tacos. Make it to round 2, you had 10 minutes to down 10 tacos. The final round was a 3-minute eat-all-you-can race.

Round 1. Kind of a crazy atmosphere with 28 of us, but we all got situated. When the plate of 15 tacos was put in front of me, my first thought was “holy crap, they’re big!”. The tacos for the last contest were tortilla, a little meat, and some cabbage. I’d say 2 ounces. These, 4 or 5 ounces, maybe? Same tortilla, bigger chunks of meat, more cabbage, and some pico de gallo. And some hot sauce. HOT. But we all had to handle the 15. I don’t remember too much about the eating, but I know I had to seriously stuff it in so I could have a clear plate at the end and move to round 2. Of the original 28 eaters, just 7 moved on to round 2.

Round 2. 10 tacos. Another serious stuff at the end. A couple of guys, who had finished their plate, puked. Some guy sporting a bandana named Damon, from New Orleans, claimed a 40-1 record in eating contests. Make that 40-2 now. Me and another guy (he had to be 6-8, maybe 260, a hulk) were the only ones to make it to round 3.

Damon puked at 22 or 23.

Round 3. The other guy was hurting, and so was I. We both just cleared our mouths from round 2 when round 3 began. He ate ½, and threw in the towel. Thankfully! I was thinking about taking the win and ending it too, but I didn’t. I at least wanted to up my taco record. I dug deep, and after putting down 3 more, I called it. 28 eaten. Upped my record from last time by 2. Him calling it after ½ was really, really fortunate for me. I was maxed.

Easily the most I’ve eaten. Easily. Between the tacos and water, no doubt about it.

The last taco eating contest at Mezcal was, comparatively, much easier. This one, not so easy. Without T-bonz, no way. I did the work, but she pulled me through. Everyone should get their own T-bonz.
