Review: Hotels & More

Trip websites are pretty much a dime a dozen these days. There are many sites: Expedia, Orbitz, Hotwire, Priceline and more. But there is a new site out there that really is worth a look: hotelreservations.com. Sure, from the name they obviously do Hotel Reservations, but they also handle air, car rentals, and they also do entire vacation packages. And the entire packages they offer are amazing! Not only are they all-inclusive (air + hotel + car) but their prices are so good! And the helpful support – from when you begin your vacation search, and then all the way through while you are on your vacation. That is really what sets them apart from the other guys – the great support they give their customers! And did I mention their prices? Great deals!

If you book your airfare on the site you will not be disappointed one bit. Unlike some sites this one gives you all the information so you are not left in the dark about any detail. Do you want to know the type of plane? They will tell you and give you many links to find out all about the planes. A lot of people want to know the total travel time, not just the flight times. They do that too, so you can know exactly what is up! Very nice features!

There is also a very handy currency converter right on the site. I think a lot of sites assume that people are in the United States, but that is not always the case. Here, if you want to convert currency into your local kind you can do it right in this same place.

They also do not hide anything! There is a very comprehensive FAQ and links on every page that fully explain what is going on and why. Very nice! Full disclosure is a good thing!

So next time, try hotelreservations.com!

Mmm Pie

We bought a "Blueberry Pie" from Safeway. But it turned out to be Blueberry Cream Pie. Whipped on top, pudding filling the bottom 90% of the inards, and pinche blueberry layer above the pudding:

Very delicious but not the blueberry pie one thinks of. Sconey will try another store later and I'll stick my face in that pie. Yeah, yeah, run with it...

Dental Master!

Long time readers will remember that I had some dental work done in 2006. Receding gum is what mine was for. But if you are in Southern California you have to see Drs. Landau and Collins to get some dental work. They can make you look good with their procedures from Bonding to Recontouring. For those in San Diego invisalign can be found here!

Look At The Little Beaver!

T-bone and I went down to the Big House this weekend to knock another item from the must-do list. This weekend: the fence so Honey & Max have their area. Well, the fence posts only as the cement has to set before putting up the rest of it. We'll finish it off in a couple of weeks.

11 holes to dig. Early in the week, I thought the holes would be a good workout for Thunder and Lightning. But later we decided to get an auger. Thinking it would be quicker and easier. Yeah, not quicker and not easier..

Here's the side before & after:

And here's the back before & after:

No sweat, right? Yeah, right...

We go to the rental place to rent the auger. We're thinking we'll grab the 1-man or 2-man model and go. But they don't rent those. Something about breaking hips and dislocating shoulders. They have two models: the Little Beaver or the Big Beaver. And the guy must love saying that as he was loud and slow each time. THE LITTLE BEAVER OR THE BIG BEAVER. We'll take that one. Over the loudspeaker: I NEED HELP WITH THE LITTLE BEAVER. LOAD UP THE LITTLE BEAVER.

Little my ass! But the E kicks ass so no problem:

This Little Beaver was a monster! Auger connected to the wheel unit by hoses and stabilizer bar. About 300 pounds together! The auger made the act of drilling the holes go much faster and easier than the manual hole digger, but in the end it was no easier. Moving the Beaver was a bitch! Getting it set just right. Honestly, I have never been as totally wiped out as I was after doing these 11 holes. Totally wiped out. More so than digging 10 post holes manually in Aurora, more so than speed climbing Loveland Pass to Torrey's Peak (25,000 feet of vertical gain and loss), more so than the hardest weight workout, more so than anything ever. My LBC is sore. The sore is sore. Ugh. But now that it's over, it feels good to have done that.

And we bought the appliances. You'll meet those later. Thanks to T-scone. She is a very fine helper.

Ants in Your Pants?

At the Big House we have a ton of ants on the front sidewalk. I do not know specifically what kind of ants they are but I found a site where I can find out much more. It deals with fire ants and you will find many articles about what fire ants are, how they live, and how to get rid of them. I will be trying some of the tips and I will let you know how it goes.

RATM! RATM!

I got my hands on the Rage Against the Machine set from Coachella. It is sweet! Sconey loves it :) You know I'm all for a good Bush-bashing as are many of you guys, and Zack does not disappoint.. Check out this clip from Wake Up. Right-click the link and choose Save As...

..."They should be hung, and tried, and shot"... Yeah, let's hang 'em, THEN try 'em, then shoot 'em! We know what he's trying to say...

Xpander

Xpander Communications is the source to go to for small businesses who want to dive in to new things like VOIP (voice over IP – the new buzzword that everyone seems to be talking about!). Xpander wants to make things easy for its customers using hosted PBX small business VoIP phone systems so they are there to guide you however you want. If you have branches scattered all over then their solutions are what you need so you can simply (and freely!) use 4-digit dialing to bring everyone together. Free and easy. What can be better! There are tons of other benefits so check them out and see what they can do for you!

Hot Hot Hot

Can it be any hotter?!? I don't think we're approaching the record for consecutive 90+ degree days but we've gotta be around 10.. The record for the number of 90+ days is like 30 or 40 something so we'll see at the end of the hot months if we're close to that.

Find Your Mate Here

This is cool! I know I do not qualify to use the site, but if I did then I would surely use this site to find some interracial singles in search of some interracial dating action. If it is interracial romance you want, then interracialromance.com is the place to go. The site is great. The search feature is so innovative and can help you pinpoint exactly what you want to find! You will find the usual men seeking women and women seeking men but also some other categories you might want to check out. Gay, lesbian, bi, or whatever direction you may swing you can find it here. So check it out and find out about interracial dating! You will not be sorry!

Yo!

I got nothing, so here:

Look at Multivend!

Here is another way you can work for yourself instead of for anyone else. Multivend, LLC. They have been around since 1990 and their reason for being is to help people realize their own self and reaching for the American dream of financial freedom. Over 9000 people cannot be wrong! The largest bulk vending machine company in the world is multivend so you know one of the best organizations is behind you. Their new products, especially the Vendstar 300, are phenomenal. Vending machines are a great way to make some big money and Multivend, LLC is one great company! Check out what they can do for you!

Review: New Cabinets?

Are you thinking about putting up new kitchen cabinets? If you are you should take a look at these guys. You will undoubtedly say "but they are metal". Yes. But, take a peek at their site and see how they look! I think they look good. They will not rust. They will not corrode. They can be any color. I think it is a great look!

Daily Record Article

Here is a link to the article in the Canon City Daily Record. I am also putting the complete text below. My comments are in (bold italics).

I think the article makes me sort of sound like an asshole, but I don't think I'm an asshole.

Andrew Lane, a competitive eater, consumes a two-pound cheeseburger.

A 'skinny boy' with a big appetite
(one word, please. I did not specifically specify that, but it was in emails as one word)

Charlotte Burrous
The Daily Record

FLORENCE — Being on stage does something to him. He loves people cheering and calling his name.
(hmmm..)

But for Andrew "Skinny Boy" Lane, it's also a challenge.

After several years of competing, he is ranked 33rd in the International Federation of Competitive Eating.

Whenever he competes, "the people sit in the audience and yell, 'eat, eat, eat,'" Lane said. "It's surreal."

His interest began when he saw it on ESPN in 2003. His fascination grew as he followed it on the Internet and on TV.

"When one of the contests came to Denver, I said, 'I'm there,'" Lane said.

But when he told his wife, Tommy, she wasn't as sure about it.
(TommyE, please. Tommye. Admittedly we did not spell her name but wouldn't most people ask..)

"I asked him how long he had been interested in it," she said.

But it's more than just eating the food.

"It's fun for one thing and I get to travel," he said. "The first one, I placed eighth out of 14 people" in a grilled cheese competition. "And I hate cheese and I hate butter, which is two thirds of it. I ate 12 of them."

Since then, he has competed in various contests, including three grilled cheese, nine-pound hamburgers, three hot dogs, kalachis, pizza and French fries contests around the country such as North Carolina, Arizona, Las Vegas and Albuquerque, N.M.
(meh..)

His latest contest was in San Francisco, Calif., where he ate several hot dogs.

"I won third in that one," Lane said.
(I know I didn't say WON)

He determines which competition to enter when he goes online. The contests are posted at majorleagueeating.com. When he begins to train, he goes to restaurants and ordering lots of food to eat. And at home, he practices when Tommy is there because of the dangers of choking.
(umm..)

"It's different than when you were a kid and you're mom was telling you to eat," Tommy said.
(yes, and your welcome.)

"It's fun being up there, fun traveling and seeing how much you can eat and know that the top guys eat like 16 pounds of food," Lane said. "I may eat four or five pounds."

For him, it's a hobby.

"Some people paint or garden, but I eat," he said. "The people are all good people."
(Two separate thoughts here. I said the "I eat" bit. It sounds humorous to hear it, but to read it that sounds dickish. And "the people" part is meant to be a shout out to the other eaters who kick ass!)

To keep from gaining weight taking on too many calories, Lane works out and eats balanced meals when he isn't training.

The next competition will be a pie eating contest July 20 in Oregon.
(July 28th)

"I've never eaten pie without hands before," he said.

Tommy said he couldn't train in a restaurant because it would be too messy.

"I told her they do not condone home training so I have to eat out," Lane joked. "It's consternation and a Catch 22. I can't eat at home, but I can't eat out."
(I know I didn't use 'consternation'. I don't even know what that means. Using it there sounds wrong.)

He may begin training at Village Inn, where it offers 'all you can eat' pancakes on the menu.

"Before I begin eating, I did not eat at all," Lane said. "To me, eating all of that is a kind of a new thing."
(Knowing the tenses I would have said "began" instead of "begin".)

When he isn't training, he works as a computer programmer.

Lane moved to Colorado in 1991 and attended the University of Colorado, where he earned a degree in geography. In 1996, he married Tommy, who is training to become a nurse at Pueblo Community College.

"I'm an athl'eat'," he joked.
(Yeah, I said that. Again, it looks dickish to read but it's hard to convey the delivery..)

The very same day we switched from Sylvan Learning Centers to Score! we saw dramatic and immediate progress with our boy Bobby. When kids love to learn, they will learn. At Sylvan, it is so much more of a "mill" feeling than at Score! And Score! has everything covered: math tutors, reading tutors, writing tutors, and much more. We do not worry about his learning as we worried in the past. Bobby is flourishing at Score with his mom in Texas so that is all that matters!

No matter what the subject matter, Score can handle it and get your kid learning too! They have the normal subjects you would expect. But they also offer study skills courses. It sometimes is how your child is studying. So I urge you to see what Score can do!

It's on! The contest will take place in Oregon. It is part of a Rolling Roadshow which is highlighting the classic movie "Stand By Me". Don't have a lot of details now, so check back. You can also find out much more at the Rolling Roadshow's page.

BP Is Good!!

I am all for freedom of expression and freedom of the press and stuff like that, but with it comes a certain responsibility. Get your facts straight! I think people can say what they want, but do not go around bad mouthing anyone if you are just plain wrong.

That is just what the Chicago Tribune did recently. They printed an article that said some stuff about BP’s Whiting Refinery. That is all fine and good, but the article got a lot wrong and misrepresented some facts.

Like about energy security and diversity. In the years ahead, BP plans to spend over $3 billion to modernize the refinery. That is a lot of money. The refinery will process much more heavy crude from Canada.

They operate outside of legal limits? Yeah, right! They have a new permit. This new permit allows the ammonia discharge to increase. Increase? Yes, but the levels will be less than half of those that federal guidelines allow.

At Whiting BP does not harm people or the environment. They could not stay in business if they did either. BP follows all state and federal laws and regulations to protect humans and water life. BP needs humans. They do not want a bad image to humans.

Chicago Tribune, get real! Read more here.

Nathan's Video Uploads

I have uploaded some videos from the replay of the 2007 broadcast. The replay is from the same-day 9pm MDT replay by which time the reversal was already edited out. But the commentary is not edited so Rich and Paul talk about it but you see some shot that doesn't quite fit. Kobayashi's in-mouth "mini-reversal" at about the 00:41 mark is still there. I guess since nothing spewed out.

1. The rules of the contest.

2. Interview of Pat Bertoletti before the eating. I just like what he says.

3. Interview of Joey before the eating. This blows my mind. Not because of what he says, but because it's on the stage like under a minute before the contest begins. Joey seems as calm as ever and it seems like just another day. Ho hum .. I'm just gonna eat some dogs .. oh yeah, there are 30,000 people here screaming and a couple million watching but whatever .. I'm taking back that belt .. there's Kobayashi... Focus, confidence, I don't know but it's amazing really. I think the ESPN interviewer is a douchebag, alright "buddy"?

4. Introduction of the Eaters. Beautiful Brian has the longer other version of the introductions. To those who don't know, the introductions are done twice: the first time for the crowd - these are longer, a bit more embellished, and done before the introductions shown on ESPN.

5. The 12-minute contest. I had set the timer to tape the live broadcast, but the time on the VCR was a little off so the recording stop with about 2 minutes left in the contest. Thankfully it was replayed at 9pm that same day. Cool, right? When the time hit 00:01 I was ready, but.. wha?!? Where'd the money shot go?!? That was lame.

bedroom furniture

Are you looking for some really nice furniture at a really nice price? As you know we bought the second house down in Florence but we really do not need any furniture for it but if we did we would definitely do most if not all of our furniture shopping here at Gallery Furniture! They have a great website and they also have a fully stocked showroom in Houston. Plus they also have a nice selection of electronics like TVs, home theaters and cables.

If I had to pick, I would go for some bedroom furniture. Maybe this set:

I like it because it has all the parts you need for a master bedroom, and the color is good. Not too dark, not too light, just right. And I like that style of bed – headboard and footboard are not too ornate and they are both higher than the mattress.

But they have a lot more! Think about something you need because they might have it. And if you are local to the showroom you can go and look at their offerings and save on shipping. For your Houston furniture needs, be sure to check them out! Too bad we did not know about them sooner.

Most fitness stuff is pretty heavy so the deal is great! Check them out now so you can get in on this!

Bertoletti Moved?

On the ESPN broadcast, the graphic for Pat Bertoletti listed his residence as Las Vegas. Did he move from Chicago? Why? That would maybe explain why he was in Las Vegas for the Nathan's qualifier that he won. Oh yeah, he did 46 then! That's some number!

Checkout the Big Buns

Cale (of finger fame) went up mountain biking at Winter Park.

They stopped for some fuel at the Mountain Rose Cafe. This giant cinnamon bun wasn't too tasty, but it looks good and $3.95 in a mountain town is a bargain.

Capella Rocks!

Look at this: Capella University keeps making the news reels! A while ago, news of the author made the news. Now, a master's degree student receives the FBI director's Community Leadership Award. Tammy Alexander is her name, and she is studying education with an emphasis on enrollment management. She won the award because of her vice presidency on the board for Infragard East Tennessee Alliance which is a federal program by the FBI to improve and extend information sharing between the private industry and the government. This award was first presented in 1990 and each year only one individual or organization wins it so this is quite the honor. Great news for her and capella university.

SupersizedApparel

Billy at SupersizedMeals.com has opened the store! Right now there are two kinds of shirts and one kind of boxer shorts. The stuff looks hot! I think his logo is one of the best I've ever seen! It's easy gift-giving any time because what eater wouldn't love it!!

Reversal Edited Out!

So I just watched the first rebroadcast of Nathan's on ESPN2 at 9pm. I also saw the live show earlier. The fuckers at ESPN or ABC or wherever cut out the Kobayashi reversal at the 00:00 mark. They left in the reversal at 00:41 but the big one got edited out. The Shea & Page commentating about the reversal is still there, but the reversal was not.

Wow. It's been a few hours since watching the live coverage but from what I remember Kobayashi did seem to not open his mouth as wide as in past years. And he seemed to be using many different styles - one dog only, two dogs at once, dog and bun at the same time - like he did it one way until that hurt, then switch again, then switch, etc. Before he used the same technique all the way through - just get in his zone and go. This year he did not seem as smooth and effortless as before. I think it was last year that Rich Shea equated Kobayashi and "balleic interplay".

This year Kobayashi seemed off to me. I think if Kobayashi had been 100% he would have won. But Joey won! Kobayashi reversed at the end! I think too if Kobayashi had been 100% he would not have reversed. I think he reversed because he lost. What is very interesting to me is that the judges did not disqualify him. Last year when Kobayashi had a mini-reversal the officials said they did not DQ him because none of the stuff fell to the table. Fair enough. But clearly some of this chunky orange, watery doggage hit the table. Nevermind he was eating his own vomit and extra HDBs well after the clock hit 00:00. Clearly a DQ. I'd love to know why the officials did not DQ him.

But enough of that! Big congratulations to Joey!

You Can Score!

Practically right away when we switched from Sylvan Learning Centers to Score! we saw immediate progress with Bobby. When kids love to learn, they will learn. At Sylvan, it is so much more of a "mill" feeling than at Score learning. They are a very innovative tutor indeed! We do not worry about finding out why that is but it is what it is. Bobby is flourishing at Score with his mom in Texas so that is all that matters!

No matter what the subject matter, Score can handle it and get your 4 to 14 year old kid learning too! They have the normal math, reading, and writing. But they also offer study skills courses. It sometimes is how your child is studying. So I urge you to see what Score can do for you and your kids!

Check It: Fun In Orlando

I do not know about you, but I want a break. It has been quite a summer in Denver so far. I love summer, but we have come to expect warm and dry summers. Looking around, Orlando seems like the perfect place to get away!

It would be nice to enjoy the warm temps and minimal humidity. And Orlando is a jam-packed vacation spot. Golf, golf, and more golf! There are tons of top-rated courses in the area. Orlando may not be right on the beach but Orlando is in the middle of the isthmus so either coast is a quick drive away. Is there more fun anywhere else? Theme parks. Disney. Epcot. Busch. Lots more. You definitely need to check it out more to get the low down on Orlando Florida Vacation Rentals. And more!

Kobayashi Wimps Out?

The paper in Summit County has a daily editorial column that is pretty well-written and also quite witty. This one looks at the Kobayashi-Chestnut rematch. Click here. We all know how the rematch turned out but the article is good reading anyway.

Pig's Feet Update

Erik, he took 2nd in the competition, has put up some words about the Pig's Feet. I thought there'd be more competitors than just the 3 eaters because I think that would be a cool title. I bet the IFOCE won't be doing Pig's Feet again any time soon so The Natural may have that title forever! Anyway, good job guys. And thanks for the insight, Erik.

Capella Again!

Check this: Capella University keeps making the news! Earlier, news of the author made the news. Now, a master’s degree student receives the FBI director’s Community Leadership Award. Very good for her and capella university.

Check The Math

The very day we switched from Sylvan Learning Centers to Score! we saw dramatic and immediate progress with Bobby who tends to underachieve in math. When kids love to learn, they will learn. At Sylvan, it is so much more of a "mill" feeling than at Score! And Score! has everything covered: math tutors, reading tutors, writing tutors, and much more. We do not worry about his learning as we worried in the past. Bobby is flourishing at Score - especially in math now - with his mom in Texas so that is all that matters!

No matter what the subject matter, Score can handle it and get your kid learning too! They have the normal subjects you would expect. But they also offer study skills courses. It sometimes is how your child is studying. So I urge you to see what Score can do!

BH&VI

We went down to the Big House this weekend. I had three things to do. Two out of three isn't bad.

First up: clearing the branches. On one side it's all trees between us and the neighbors (side note: the neighbor lady is a nurse at the state hospital in Pueblo, who went to ... PCC-Fremont, coincidentally T is in the same program! Plus, the lady two doors down from the neighbor also is just finishing the same program! Odds of that?). Anyway, the branches. Here's a before & after.

And from the back. Before, branches and leaves on the roof and actually on the power feed lines. After, now off the roof and off the lines:

#1, check.

Next up: the front door. In the before you can see how crappy it looks. It's old, with that lovely glass pattern. And around the frame is the hardware for a screen door - but no door. Found the door in the workshop. Went to put it on, and it was obvious then why the screen door was taken off - where the hinges attach to the door, yeah the screw holes are about twice as wide as the screws (which were still on the frame on the front door). But I found a way, and the screen door works better than I ever thought it would:

#2, check.

Number 3 was to be the insulation in the attic but the attic access in the ceiling is in the bathroom. That's not a problem, but the access is probably 9"x12". I could fit through, but no chance of a roll of insulation going through. So we'll get some insulation blown in. That's still a high priority item before the winter, but the ceiling is suspended below the actual ceiling so there is some insulating effect there. So no #3.

On the way back on Sunday we went to Village Inn. If you don't know about the pancake promotion, read it here. The first order is nice - 3 good-sized pancakes.

Here is what you better be aware of: any "reorders" you want are their 4" size. And only *2* of them per reorder. Luckily the guy was game and allowed me to get 4 at once:

These are of a perfect size for my mother-in-law. And since she is a senior on a fixed income this promotion at Village Inn is not only delicious but affordable too. After she puts the premium unleaded in her red Audi S4 she can putter over to Village Inn and enjoy some tasty pancakes.

Locust in Daly City

Here is a short video - I had not found until today - posted to Yahoo Video of Rich at the Nathan's qualifier in Daly City:

My review of the Nathan's Hot Dog competition in Daly City is here. Check it out!

Pig's Feet

The contest was last Saturday and the IFOCE announced results so we know it took place but there have been no opinions by any of the competitors, no details about how much they ate, or no pictures of what they ate. Erik? The contest did take place, yes?

Score Is More

Is your child doing OK in school? If not then keep him or her sharp this way. The very day we switched from Sylvan Learning Centers to Score! we saw immediate and dramatic progress with Bobby. When kids love to learn, they will learn. At Sylvan, it is so much more of a "mill" feeling than at Score! And Score! has everything covered: math tutors, reading tutors, writing tutors, and much more. We do not need to worry about his learning as we worried in the past. Bobby is flourishing at Score with his mom in Texas so that is all that matters!
